In a lesson on shadow, the night should not be left out, as the world lives in the shadow of the sun.
Cartoonists have a unique way of drawing nocturnal scenes; they usually use solid, cool colors like shades of purple, blue, green and gray, along with shades of yellow/orange for moonlight, artificial light or fire. Black is truly black.
CHOOSE EXTRA 1 or EXTRA 2 FOR A NOCTURNAL DRAWING EXPERIMENT.
EXTRA 1:
Step 1: Create with pencil or pen and ink one comic strip image that includes at least one light source. Limit yourself to outlines. I started with my 2B pencil on paper (A6 size, an A4 sheet divided into quarters).
Stap 2: Scan your drawing and color it with a drawing program like Photoshop or Procreate. Build your colors up in layers if necessary. Make the outlines black.
EXTRA 2: Download the following drawing. Add nighttime colors with a drawing program like Photoshop or Procreate. Build up your colors in layers if necessary. Feel free to improvise; there’s no right or wrong solution.
At the very bottom of the chapter 6 I show my own elaboration.
