The running figure seems like he’s made of rubber. The lines all over his body that show the roundness of his arms, legs and torso and also whether an arm or leg is moving towards us or away from us: his left arm and right upper leg are moving towards us. His left leg and right arm are moving away from us. These lines on his body are the visible part of ovals. You would only be able to see whole ovals if the figure had been transparent as in the adjacent image.
Exercise: Try to draw such a figure in the same or a different pose.
The figure looks a bit like the famous Michelin man, who’s made up of car tires from the French brand Michelin. Here too, the visible part of the ovals indicates the curves and directions of the body. Many truckers have him in their truck as a mascot. More about this figure in the last chapter.
