In a drawing, you can imagine piles of all sorts of things.
Look at the mountain of cylindrical cardboard toilet roll tubes. Only one tube at the front is fully visible. Because of the overlaps, only parts of all the other tubes are visible. This makes this messy pile appear truly three-dimensional.
Exercise: Draw a stack/mountain of relatively simple objects, such as the cardboard tubes or the objects below. Let the stack fill as much of your paper as possible.
Here are some results by primary school pupils (aged about 10).
Who doesn’t want a pile of presents?
Pupils can give a task a completely surprising twist, as the imaginative final drawing shows.
EXTRA: Mom or dad yells, “TIDY UP YOUR ROOM!” What piles of stuff did they find in your room? Sketch/take pictures of clutter and use them as inspiration for a drawing.
