A special form of columns from ancient times are the Caryatids: sculpted women who eternally bear the burden of the fact that their men have been killed in war.
In the photo they are carrying the roof of the Erechtheion, a temple on the Acropolis Hill in Athens.
It must be a heavy burden to carry that roof, but they still stand proud and relaxed.
Exercise: Try to draw a temple with human figures (or other creatures) instead of columns supporting the roof. Notice how simplified embellishments from this lesson have been used.
