Characteristic of a person’s profile is mainly the line from forehead to nose, mouth and chin. For the next exercise, ask a family member or friend to pose for you ‘en profil’ (face from the side) or take/choose a photo of a profile.
Exercise: Trace as carefully as possible somebody’s profile line from the forehead to the chin, transitioning to the neck. If necessary, start very lightly with loose, straight lines (left). Pay close attention to how far the nose protrudes. Only then should you connect the lines with nice curves (right). Behind the hollow between the nose and forehead you may want to add a simplified eye, a triangle with a small roof on top (last image of this chapter).
EXTRA: If you draw two profiles opposite each other you can play a joke with the residual shape between them.
