Drapery is a heavily pleated or loosely hanging fabric.

Exercise 1: Draw all three examples of a cloth hanging on a clothesline. The top one is still quite stiff. For the bottom right canvas, you can also start at the bottom with the S-line.

In the following three examples, a cloth or clothing curls loosely around something round.
Exercise 2: Draw all three examples. Notice how the fabric curls around something so that it doesn’t appear stuck to it.

Exercise 3: In the following examples, folds have been added. Choose some of them to copy.

With a normal shirt, sweater, jacket or trousers you also see all kinds of folds appear when an arm or leg is bent. Because the fabric doesn’t hang loose anywhere here, you don’t call it drapery.
