A crocodile is chased on a mountain slope by a knight on horseback. The knight feels strong and brave but does not realize that he is being chased himself by a giant ball that hurtles down the mountainside. The ball looks huge because the knight on horseback and the crocodile are drawn so small. The movement lines give extra speed to the giant ball.
Compare the giant ball from the chase with the image about the shadow on the moon. Both spheres have shadows, but the moon appears completely flat. To make something appear convex, the transition between light and shadow needs to be a bit blurry. More about drawing shadows can be found in the Shadow lesson (level 1).
Saul Steinberg, the original artist of the mountain chase, made up other crazy chases like a giant ball chasing someone uphill. The movement lines make it look like the ball is rolling upwards. It’s fun to draw things that are impossible in real life.
Exercise 2: Also invent a pursuit uphill.
